Cage
No Sterilite, Rubbermaid or plastic bins, NO aquariums,
NO wire bottom cages and NO Wooden cages !
When choosing a cage it is best to use a cage that has a solid bottom (to avoid mess)with medium spaced
bars (that helps to avoid injury), and the cage must have a tight fitting lid( to prevent escape) The larger the better! The
cage should be large enough to allow ample room for your pet and his cage accessories. But not so large that it is unmanageable
to keep clean.
The minimum size should be 25" x 17" = 2.9 sq feet
Water Bottle
8 Ounce, leak proof, plastic water bottles are ideal. We like Oasis Bottles but there are many other
brands & styles to choose from.
Food Dish
Heavy, ceramic, non tip, crock style, food bowls are ideal.
Bedding
Aspen, Pine, Yesterdays News, Carefresh all work fine (avoid Cedar ) We do not recommend using cage liners unless
you are absolutely sure they will be changed and replaced daily.
Hiding Hut
‘Igloos’ work great they are bottomless which means it is easier to clean and you don’t have
to shake the little guy when cleaning his cage.
Exercise Wheels
A MUST! There are many exercise wheels to choose from. As long as they have a solid wheel for safety and it is
large enough for them to fit in they should work fine. Be sure it can not be tipped over easily.
Toys
Hedgehogs enjoy rooting and moving things around. Ping Pong balls and light weight solid plastic toys
like small kongs, and small animal treat ball type dispensers help stimulate them and keep them busy.
Plastic Tubes Plastic tubes an tunnels for crawling through are enjoyed by most hedgehogs. Just be
sure they are large enough
Litter Pan and litter
Some hedgehogs will learn to use a litter box. While not really that common, it may be worth a try . If you are
lucky to get yours trained to a small litter pan in the corner of the cage it may lessen the number of times that you may
need to change the cage.
Hedgehog Food or Cat Food
We recommend good quality high protein low fat, age appropriate, cat foods such as Royal Canin, Nutrience,
Eagle Pack. Some brands of hedgehog food are okay but be sure to check the expiry date. WE PRFER NOT TO USE HEDGEHOG FOODS
Treats
We use Organic when possible, freeze dried liver treats, kiln dried chicken, salmon etc.
Nail Clippers
Small cat claw Scissors will do the trick BUT HUMAN FINGER NAILS SEEM MORE EASY TO USE.
Pet Shampoo
All natural, Vegetable based organic Pet shampoos are fairly inexpensive & safe. Do not use
products containing Tea Tree Oils.
Pet Carrier
It is advisable to have a plastic pet carrier for travelling with your pet. The carrier should be
equipped with food and water utensils.
Exercise Pens
There are several styles of exercise pens available that allow your pet to play in a safe and secure
area. Some have solid plastic walls others are made of thick gauge wire.
First Aid Kit
Quick stop antiseptic powder, disinfectant, cotton swabs, gauze, tape, prescription meds such as deworming,
mite treatment medicines, vitamins and mineral supplements, heat light warming disc thermal blanket.
For sanitary reasons, for both the pet and the caregiver, we choose not to use or recommend products
made of natural cloth or synthetic fabric for use in our pets’ cages. Instead we prefer recycled paper or natural organic
grass products that can be disposed of daily in the compost bin.
If you are detirmined to use cloth products buy many and be prepared to do a lot of laundry.
